Contribution to the hydrogeological knowledge of an artificial recharge area based on hydrochemical investigation. Los Arenales site, Duero basin, (Spain).

The intensive exploitation of groundwater in some areas of “Arenales aquifer” (Duero basin, Spain) has caused an outstanding decrease of phreatic levels, and the reaction of the Agriculture Ministry (MAPA) of the Spanish government, who has planned to carry out several experiences of artificial recharge in the aquifer, in order to minimize environmental alterations.

The availability of groundwater analytical data and the characterization of the aquifer through direct and stochastic hydrochemical procedures has allowed to improve the aquifer hydrogeologycal knowledge and to obtain some forecasts related to the quality evolution of groundwater during artificial recharge. The aim of this paper is to define the environmental and the aquifer characteristics deduced from the available hydrochemical data, so as to predict the most important processes in different areas of the aquifer. That will let to obtain the maximum profit from the artificial recharge activities, minimizing the environmental negative impacts.

Hydrogeological studies previous to the artificial recharge of Los Arenales aquifer, Duero basin (Spain).

The intensive rate of groundwater exploitation in several areas of “Los Arenales” aquifer (Duero Basin, Spain) during last four decades has originated a remarkable descent of water heads. As a consequence of this problem, the ministry of agriculture of Spanish government (MAPA) began several studies and inquiries based on artificial superficial recharge in order to minimize environmental impacts.

The main aim of this writing is to describe the employed methodology based on three-dimensional palaeogeography reconstruction of the wind-sand detrital aquifer employing topographical and geophysical methods, carrying out hydraulic tests in boreholes, etc, in order to find out the behaviour of the aquifer and its response to artificial recharge. Complementary studies allowed accurate Modflow modeling, which uses quantitative data about the volume of water involved and the most adequate recharge method and facilities in each area. The results suggest that this aquifer is appropriate for artificial recharge application, the methodology is feasible and useful to other similar aquifers, and the consequences of its application should be profitable in agriculture benefits, environmental alterations and social acceptation.
